Hookipa yesterday. Photo by Jimmie Hepp from this album.
I thought my downwinder was going to be epic, so I took the camera with me. It wasn't, but here's a short clip anyway. I came in at Kanaha in the middle of a 2h beach shutdown due to a shark sighting.
5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Lanai
- 1.7ft, 9s, S 180º
Barbers
- 1.8ft, 9s, SSE 150º
Tiny 9s S-SSE energy at the buoys. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.
North shore
NW101
- 1.9ft, 15s, N 350º
- 2.1ft, 11s, NNW 330º
NW001
- 2.1ft, 15s, NNW 345º
Hanalei
- 3.3ft, 12s, NW 320º
Waimea
- 3.6ft, 13s, NW 310º
Mokapu
- 4.4ft, 9s, E 100º
- 4ft, 6s, ENE 75º
NW energy still in the water at the upstream buoys at around 3ft 12-13s while a new small pulse of 15s energy is at the NW buoys. Today is going to be the last day of pleasant conditions (waves and weather) before a front reaches the islands tomorrow bringing onshore winds, rain and and stormy rough big surf. After that a low will form just north of us, blocking the trades flow and continuing to send medium period northerly energy. Kahului harbor will have waves for at least 5 days in a row.
Home guess for Hookipa this morning is around head high with possible bigger sets and relatively light wind in the first hours of light.
Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
Fetches map (circles legend: red: direct aim, blue: angular spreading, black: blocked, yellow: possibly over the ice sheet) from Windy.
North Pacific (about 4 days travel time from the NW corner of the North Pacific):
South Pacific (about 7 days travel time from east/west of New Zealand):
