Wednesday 12 6 17 morning call

Just a quick windsurf session at Kanaha for me yesterday, the best part of which was the shower.

Here's a couple of alternative activities/spots of a day in which it was difficult to find something fun to do in the water, because of the strong northerly wind.

The Kihei coast offered some epic downwinding conditions. Photo by Bill Boyum.

I'm adding this video by Jeremy Riggs at 7.15am that shows how hard a downwinder with the foil is. He's using a Maliko 160 (the one that I have). I'm waiting to put my hands on a Maliko 200 to give it another try. We just received some Iwa's at Hi-Tech btw, which is the new version of the Maliko 160 with curved tips. Supposingly a little less lift, but more manouvrable. Haven't tried one yet, but I'd like to get one of those too.

The Waiehu coast also had wind and plenty waves. The lonely kiter out is Cruser Putnam.

3am significant buoy readings
South shore

No indication of southerly energy at the buoys. The Surfline forecast calls for a new long period pulse filling in today (0.5f 18s from 195 at 8am) and increasing tomorrow (1.5f 15s at 8am).
Here's Pat Caldwell's description of the source: A severe gale at the eastern edge of the Hawaii swell window in the mid latitudes S of French Polynesia 11/29-12/1 could keep low, long-period swell within Wednesday to Friday with a peak on Thursday from 170-190 degrees.

For once I disagree with him. Below is the maps of Nov 29 and 30. The arrow indicates the fetch he describes, but I think the energy we will eventually receive is from the angular spreading of the much bigger but oriented towards south America fetch down south. Whatever it was, let's just hope we get some as there wasn't much at all yesterday. Lahaina could also get some wrap from the strong NNW swell announced below.

North shore
NW001
12.4ft @ 13s from 344° (NNW)
5.5ft @ 10s from 352° (N)

N
12.3ft @ 14s from 335° (NNW)
7.6ft @ 10s from 341° (NNW)

Waimea
12.7ft @ 13s from 344° (NNW)
4.2ft @ 10s from 349° (NNW)

Strong mix of NNW swells with two components of different period and size. The open spots on the north shore will be too big to surf, but the sheltered ones could be ok. Upper west side will see plenty action too.

This week will have big high tides in the morning.

Wind map at noon shows light NE trades.

North Pacific keeps offering mixed fetches at different locations and distances from WNW to NNW.

South Pacific offers a weak fetch of which we could get a bit of angular spreading in a week.

Morning sky shows some clouds moving over us from the north.
