Wednesday 1 31 24 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning during the last half day of kona. What a month it has been for surfing.

7am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion. South shore

No southerly energy at Barbers, but there's waves (kona windswell and/or west wrap). Check the Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

Plenty NW energy of all periods at the buoys. Home guess for Hookipa is around double overhead plus and not as clean as it has been all month, despite the no wind in the early morning. The Pipe contest is on.

Yet another day of kona wind at Lanes and Robby Naish was still out there. Photo by FishBowlDiaries.

No southerly energy at Barbers, but looks like there's kona's windswell. Check the Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

      • 2.8ft

WNW swell continues pretty solid at NW and Waimea, while Pauwela shows smaller numbers, which should increase throughout the day though. Home guess for Hookipa is around head and a half  in the morning with leftover kona wind. The second half of the day should see bigger sizes and light wind switching to onshore. It's been three weeks of almost continuous kona wind, but that is going to end today.

Monday 1 29 24 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning.

The afternoon saw plenty action. Here's the usual aerial precision of Browsinho.

Liam Coralle chose The point to put up his show.

Sliding that F-one SK8 on the lip.

This is a very cool move by Cash Berzolla. He was riding the wave (you can still see the wake), went deep in the bottom turn, jibed and now is aiming at the lip in the top left of the picture.

And the he hit it like that, throwing an aerial move afterwards. Never seen it before and very cool.

In this picture, he's another example of a regular footer holding the wing by the front hand. He will have to lift the wing when he goes back towards the wave for the top turn.

Here instead he's holding it by the back hand and, imo, that looks better with the wing getting less in the way.

Front hand holding on this one.

Here he just landed an aerial move and he's holding the wing with the back hand and the rail of the board with the front one. I guess at that level you choose which hand to use based on the wave and on the moves you want to do on it. I will have to ask him if my guess is correct and what are the criteria for choosing one hand over the other.

WNW went up a notch at the upstream buoys. Home guess for Hookipa is around head and a half to double and more kona. The Pipe master's contest waiting period starts today, but they're going to wait for the kona to stop blowing, which should happen tomorrow mid day.

Sunday 1 28 24 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning.

FishBowlDiaries posted an album of the mid day action at Lanes and The point.

Around 4pm there were only a few wingers out. Interesting how both these guys are regular and hold the wind with the left (front) hand.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion. South shore

No southerly energy at Barbers, plus onshore flow. Check the Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

I'm sure you noticed how consistent the WNW energy has been at the NW buoy. Below are the maps of January 25 through 20 that show that that will continue to be the case in the next few days. I went back all the way to the 15th and there was a west fetch every single day since then. Yes, that's unusual and due to how deep the jet stream is dipping in the westernen North Pacific giving us this prolonged regime of kona wind not necessarily associated with an approaching front. Home guess for Hookipa is around head to head and a half and more kona.

Saturday 1 27 24 morning call

Once again yesterday Hookipa was as good as it gets. The pictures start with a sequence of Nora Liotta.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion. South shore

No small southerly energy at Barbers, but there's small waves with onshore flow. Check the Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

      • 2.6ft

WNW swell continues at the NW buoys and locally Pauwela shows almost 5ft 12s from 335. Home guess for Hookipa is head and a half to occasionally double and excellent conditions again with light kona in the early morning.
