Hookipa 4 30 07

I had a killer session with a nice slightly onshore unusually steady trade wind. When I got there, it was pretty light and I rigged the 5.5 with the camera mounted on the top.
By the time I was done, the wind had picked up, but I didn't want to redo the whole thing.
So I was ready to go out slightly overpowered (never a problem on a Superfreak), but I was wondering if to use my small 68l Quatro.
5.5 on a 68l? That didn't sound right...
I even asked asked the two guys that were rigging with me an opinion about that weird combination. Here are their answers:
Jason Diffin (Simmer Sails designer):"uff, that's pushing it to the limit..."
Pio Marasco (Maui Fin Company owner):"Nientemen'... vai, vai, ma ch' t' n' fott'..."

Oh, forgot... Pio is from Napoli too and that in our dialect means something like:"sure, why not?". Something like that...

If I never try, I'll never know... so I tried. It kind of worked. Not the best, of course. But I managed to have some fun. A lot of fun, actually. And that's, again, because for once the wind wasn't 3 knots on the inside and 30 on the outside...

Here's a little clip.
If you can't see it here, try here.

After my sesh, I sat on the hill and shoot a few pics.
Sailor of the day, Francisco Porcella. Because of goiters like this,

and hits like this,

but, ESPECIALLY because after he did all kind of stuff like that sailing, he grabbed his surfboard and went surfing!
Ah, being 20 again...

Glenn was on fire too. Here's backloop number... ok, I gave up counting them.

One more (sorry, the bloody watermark sw put the address in the middle and I'm too tired to fix it).

Here's a table top.

Tommorrow there's a new NNW swell coming, but the wind is already back to its awful usual gustiness. There's also a south swell, though...
Mmm...
Windsurfing on the north shore or surfing on the south shore...
Mmm...

Hey Giampaolo,

Nice video! And using the song, "Agua de Beber", that's a great touch. And you have the camera on the right side of the mast this time! But where was camera #2? Haven't figured out timecode yet?

Lano, thanks!

Ely, what do you mean on the right side of the mast this time? It was on that side also the previous me and glenn times...
Anyway, camera #2 was in this session on the mast right above the boom shooting at me while riding. It would have been a great opportunity to do a double POV clip, but unfortunately there was some humidity in the case and the clip was blurred. 100% my fault, I learned now that I have to check better to see if there's any drop of water left from the day before rinsing off action...

I did mix some of the clips of the slalom Kanaha sesh (no timecode, just working with the cronograph...), but I'm still working on them... stay tuned.

No double shots for a while, I broke a case and I'm waiting for replacement.

I heard dozens of people complaining at Lower Kanaha about gusts, too much wind and heavy chop but I had a great session yesterday on my 4.2/85ltr waveboard combination. Now I know how silly it is to complain. Hang up and sail. Mystery Bob

Hey Giampaolo,

Sorry about the blurry cam and the broken case! What I meant about the first comment was that in your first clip from the mast tip a few days ago, the camera was focused on the side of the sail that did not have a rider (port side) when the rider was on the starboard side. It was just a small part of your early footage, so not much more than a quibble. Keep up the good work!

Bob, way to go!

Ely, can't shoot both sides at the same time... and I always put it on the wave riding side, but I liked to start that first video with a couple of jumps, which, of course, won't show the sailor. Same as Glenn's jumps. Next time I'll mount it on Glenn's sail, maybe I'll put it on the jump side... it would be nice to see what his body does in a backloop...

Hey Giampaolo,

Great vid! Hey how durable is that mast top set up? Have you taken any hard wipeouts in the waves with the camera rig? Would like to set something like that up here in Hatteras since hopefully we will be getting waves soon once the tropical season begins.

Bill, I did take a few wipeouts... so far so good.
I would imagine that if the top of the mast get stuck in the reef the batten will break, but in that case, there's a safety zip tie the connects the camera to the sail (that has little rope ring at the top).
