Sunday 8 16 20 morning call

Thanks to blog reader Shep for the donation.

SUP foiling downwind attempt n.26 yesterday, it was my second best thanks to a proper d/w board that Dave Kalama let me try. Easier takeoffs (still had to wait for the right opportunity) and better bump riding, thanks also to all the winged downwinders I've done since the last SUP downwinder. The more wing downwinders you do, the better you get at reading and using the bumps, so that's a great cross-training. Take-offs are instead still hard and that's when a proper board (narrower and a bit longer, more tracky and glidy) helps.

Jimmie Hepp posted a big gallery of shots of yesterday's action at Hookipa. Three shots made the first cut, then I couldn't drop any, so here are them all.

3am significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
1.3ft @ 16s from 194° (SSW)
0.8ft @ 13s from 195° (SSW)

Lanai
1ft @ 18s from 186° (S)
1ft @ 12s from 186° (S)

One foot 18s (1.4ft at the previous reading) at Lanai show that the long period energy out of the complex fetch configuration that happened last week down under is in our waters. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency (this last one probably very low).

North shore
Pauwela
4.4ft @ 8s from 58° (ENE)

NE swell definitely down today (and no windswell fetch in today's map below), small waves at Hookipa, bigger on eastern exposures.

Wind map at noon
(the other ones can be found at link n.-2 of GP's meteo websites list in the right column).

Fetches map (circles legend: red: direct aim, blue: angular spreading, black: blocked, yellow: apparent direct aim, but out of the great circle ray map, so not 100% sure).
North Pacific (about 4 days travel time from the NW corner of the North Pacific):

South Pacific (about 7 days travel time from east/west of New Zealand):
