Thursday 2 1 18 morning call

Shortboard and longboard sessions for me yesterday, both at Hookipa and both with pretty good waves. This is a shot from the morning, I actually liked the sunset glass-off better.

No indication of southerly energy at the buoys and the Surfline forecast confirms that.

North shore

New WNW swell on the rise today, but only in the afternoon. Pretty solid reading at the NW buoy, but from 292, which is a direction that gets blocked a good amount. Below are the graphs of NW and Waimea together with the Surfline forecast which indicates 4f 12s at 2pm and 8f 12s at 8pm both from 302 after the refraction (blue line). In the meantime, we'll play with the leftover of the N swell and of the stubborn E swell.


Yesterday the Kona got strong exactly at 9am as the model predicted. But it didn't do those direction switches later in the day. This is the 7am map that shows excellent wind conditions everywhere.


Wind map at noon shows the Kona squeezing in the valley and blowing sideoff on the north shore.


North Pacific shows the strong fetch producing the weekend swell. On the right map I highlighted the direction range which will be 290-310 and that gets partially blocked in Maui.


South Pacific shows a wide but weak fetch in the Tasman Sea.

I wanted to mention yesterday (but I guess it's not too late) that the two WRF models I use (SOEST and what should be the same METOGRAM you use, just different colors) showed the Kona wind all day yesterday - not switching. The difference might be timing, I'm looking at 8am while you're posting at, what, 5am? My guess is sometimes the model isn't updated yet when you post ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

later in the morning, it's still 37h old. Not sure what time it gets updated.
