Sunday 2 6 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning.

Hookipa late afternoon.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
0.7ft @ 20s from 191° (SSW)

Barbers reads small long period southerly energy, probably from the angular spreading fetch you can see in the maps below of Jan 30 and 31.

Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101
6.3ft @ 13s from 313° (NW)

Hanalei

8ft @ 13s from 308° (WNW)

Waimea

6.9ft @ 13s from 314° (NW)

Mokapu
4.6ft @ 9s from 62° (ENE)

Hilo
6.5ft @ 9s from 87° (E)

Also Mokapu is back online, but until Pauwela is back I'm going to keep posting also Hilo, as I noticed that the trades windswell is often bigger on the Big Island than in Oahu. Maui is probably in between the two. WNW to NW energy continues at the buoys, home guess for Hookipa is around head and a half.

Forecast of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.

(two days old model run). The other ones can be found here.

Some pictures from yesterday's wonderful morning at Hookipa, starting from a classic Ian Gentil arc.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers is mostly reading NW wrap and can't be used to detect small southerly energy. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101

6.9ft @ 15s from 308° (WNW)
4.9ft @ 11s from 320° (NW)

Hanalei

6.9ft @ 13s from 304° (WNW)

Waimea

5.6ft @ 13s from 306° (WNW)

Kaneohe Bay
3.4ft @ 9s from 46° (NE)

Hilo
5.3ft @ 9s from 73° (ENE)

The current WNW swell is declining at the upstream buoys while the NW ones show the new pulse at around 7ft 15s. This pulse will only start to arrive locally in the afternoon. Home guess for Hookipa in the morning is for head to head and a half and clean conditions. There should be some trades in the afternoon, even though the SOEST wind maps were not updated during the night, hence they're less reliable.

Forecast of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.

Friday 2 4 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning.

The light wind winging session at Kanaha was extremely enjoyable.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
SW
2.2ft @ 13s from 172° (S)

Barbers is mostly reading NW wrap and can't be used to detect small southerly energy, but thw SW buoy shows 2.2ft 13s from the south. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.
Below is an image that shows Pipeline and Lahaina. The finals of the contest at Pipe are off, probably because the wind will be better in the next few days.

North shore
NW101
8.3ft @ 13s from 307° (WNW)

Hanalei

8ft @ 14s from 317° (NW)

Waimea

5.1ft @ 14s from 314° (NW)

Hilo

3.8ft @ 11s from 49° (NE)
3.3ft @ 9s from 66° (ENE)

New WNW swell peaked during the night at the NW buoys and is still rising in our waters. Below are the graphs of NW101 and Waimea together with the Surfline forecast that shows the swell steadily picking up throught the day locally. Home guess for Hookipa is for head and a half, clean and building.

Small long period southerly energy at Barbers. Below are the maps of Jan 27 through 29 showing the fetch that generated it.

North shore
NW101

2.4ft @ 10s from 288° (WNW)

Hanalei

3.3ft @ 11s from 320° (NW)

Waimea

3.7ft @ 12s from 322° (NW)

Hilo
4.1ft @ 8s from 85° (E)

NW energy winding down at all the buoys. Today is another transition day before another swell hits tomorrow at around 6ft 14s. Home guess for Hookipa is for around head high and relatively clean conditions.

Forecast of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers is mostly reading NW wrap and can't be used to detect small southerly energy. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101

5.7ft @ 13s from 317° (NW)
3.7ft @ 10s from 303° (WNW)

Hanalei

5.6ft @ 13s from 309° (WNW)
3.6ft @ 11s from 314° (NW)

Waimea

6.6ft @ 13s from 313° (NW)
2.8ft @ 11s from 314° (NW)

Thanks to blog reader Ben who left a comment on yesterday's post with a workaround way to access the buoy graphs (thank you very much), below is Waimea's graph that shows the very steep rise of the swell yesterday afternoon. If you were watching the Pipe Masters, I'm sure you noticed. Make it a foot or two smaller and shift it 5 hours later, and you get how the swell rose locally. Which means that it peaked during the night and today should be on the steady decline all day. Sunrise should still have solid size (about 6ft 13s). Home guess for Hookipa is for double overhead at least and no wind for most of the morning.

Big swell is definitely a late afternoon affair.

Hookipa yesterday morning.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers is mostly reading NW wrap and can't be used to detect small southerly energy. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101

9.4ft @ 15s from 318° (NW)

NW001

11.8ft @ 15s from 317° (NW)

Hanalei

5.5ft @ 12s from 313° (NW)

Waimea

4.4ft @ 13s from 326° (NW)

New NW swell has risen at the outer NW buoys, but not yet at the upstream islands (at least not in the readings, but small 16+s energy might be laying underneath already). Below is the graph of NW101 (the only one left, by mistake I think) together with the Surfline forecast. The red circle on the graph highlights the steep rise and the timing is compatible with the prediction on the right.

Below are the fetches of Jan 29 through 31. The fetch got more intense and moved north on the 30 and 31 and that's when it generated the high energy we will receive this evening.

Home guess for Hookipa in the morning is once again very challenging and around head high in rising to double plus in the late afternoon.

Forecast of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.
