Tuesday 8 31 21 morning call

Gorgeous conditions on the south shore yesterday. This is Jason Hall.

3am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers

2.3ft @ 12s from 183° (S)
0.7ft @ 18s from 187° (S)

Southerly energy down to 12s while a bit of new 18s energy appears at Barbers. Below are the fetches of August 25 and 26 that show the fetch that could be the source. Overall, a smaller day that the past two, but there should still be some fun size waves.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela

1.8ft @ 9s from 82° (E)
1.8ft @ 7s from 63° (ENE)

Another flat day on the north shore.

Monday 8 30 21 morning call

Kane winging in the harbor at sunset in 10 knots of wind. Love those conditions.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
2.8ft @ 13s from 179° (S)

Finally I get to be surprised too by a south swell (since I didn't see the originating fetch)! Low consistency, but sets up to head high yesterday on the Lahaina side. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
2.4ft @ 8s from 61° (ENE)

Another day of flatness on the north shore.

Sunday 8 29 21 morning call

No photos from yesterday, this is a video that Titouan posted about a wing session at La Perouse during the last south swell.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
2.2ft @ 14s from 188° (S)

Small south swell now down to 14s but nice fun size at 2.2ft. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
2.4ft @ 8s from 58° (ENE)

Windswell is marginal, north shore is going to be flat.

Saturday 8 28 21 morning call

Thanks to Charles for the donation.

Hookipa yesterday morning. There were bigger ones, up to chest high.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers

1.1ft @ 16s from 192° (SSW)
0.8ft @ 11s from 185° (S)

New small SSW swell is in the forecasts (2.2ft 15s predicted by Surfline tonight), but Barbers only shows 1.1ft 16s. Better than nothing. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
3.6ft @ 7s from 65° (ENE)

The windswell did go finally down and today the north shore will be borderline flat with some small waves at Pavils and on the eastern exposures.

Friday 8 27 21 morning call

No photos from yesterday, although I had a brilliant opportunity to film again Tituan Galea, back on Maui after two years. He's one of the two kids that showed us (and the whole world) what was possible to do with the wing on the waves. He was pleased to see me and thanked me for this video that helped him launch his career. He's now doing double back flips!

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
1.3ft @ 14s from 191° (SSW)

Not much at Barbers, check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
4.9ft @ 8s from 52° (ENE)

The reason I didn't film Titouan is that I had to test a downwind SUP foiling board in the late afternoon and I didn't have much time. So I launched at Hookipa headed to Kuau. The shore break was un-negotiable from my point of view, so I got in the water at Pavils. The sets at The Point were head high, sometimes plus. I put an arrow on the Pauwela graph below to show how much the windswell increased at that time. The same graph turns into a forecast and it keeps showing a down trend, but I remember the fetch being pretty decent in the last few days, so there should be waves at Hookipa and on the eastern exposures also today. Home guess is around belly to chest high.

Thursday 8 27 21 morning call

No photos from yesterday. Next photo from my trip is the Horseshoe bend of the Colorado river. Hard to photograph without a wide angle lens.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers
1.7ft @ 14s from 201° (SSW)

This Tasman sea energy has been painfully slow, so check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
5.2ft @ 8s from 50° (NE)

Windswell getting smaller and smaller, home guess for Hookipa and eastern exposures is around waist to chest high.

Wednesday 8 25 21 morning call

No photos from yesterday, maybe I'll post the shots from the trip whenever that happens. Let's start from the Glen Canyon.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers

1.7ft @ 15s from 210° (SSW)

1.6ft @ 11s from 180° (S)

Barbers still shows some long and medium period southerly energy. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
5.5ft @ 8s from 57° (ENE)

Windswell is on a down trend at the buoy. Home guess for Hookipa is around chest high, bigger on eastern exposures.

Forecast and energy spectrum of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.

Tuesday 8 24 21 morning call

I'm back from my trip, this is how "my timeline" on Google Maps shows the itinerary. I added the arrows to show the direction in which I moved. The start (and end) was in Las Vegas, as I wanted to drive through the Monument Valley again (I did that 23 years ago and it was amazing). Plus, that's where I found an incredibly cheap deal on a commercial van (two seats in the front and completely empty in the back) that allowed me to buy some camping gear and sleep in it.

Too many beautiful places to mention, maybe one day I'll do a proper report with photos etc. Here I'm just going to mention that I did squeeze some water activities in thanks to some friends that landed me gear (I only had a 3m wing with me): I did some wake foiling on Lake Sammamish (thanks Tim!) and some wing foiling in the Gorge (thanks Dan and Alex!). Here's a video posted by Alex Aguera showing the conditions at Rufus, the last day I was there. Riding those bumps downwind was so much fun, that I feel like I want to go back next year.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers

1.7ft @ 16s from 206° (SSW)
1.5ft @ 13s from 193° (SSW)

Lanai is still down, Barbers shows decent long period numbers. I don't have (and won't for 7 days) the fetch maps, so the webcam is even more key. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
Pauwela
6.2ft @ 8s from 55° (ENE)

I believe yesterday there were epic surfing conditions on the eastern exposures, as I saw readings of 10mph from the WSW and bigger numbers at the buoy. 6ft 8s is still a good read, but the wind is back to a trades direction. Hookipa should have waves up to head high, possibly bigger on eastern exposures.

Forecast and energy spectrum of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.
