Friday 3 31 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday mid day.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.7ft
    , 13s, SW 215º

Lanai shows some SW energy. Below are the maps of March 24 though 26 that show the Tasman Sea fetch that generated it.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 7.5ft
    , 9s, E 85º
  • 1.9ft
    , 11s, WNW 300º

N

  • 3.9ft
    , 15s, NE 45º
  • 6.6ft
    , 7s, ESE 110º
  • 3.1ft

Mokapu

  • 5.3ft
    , 7s, E 95º
  • 1.7ft
    , 13s, NE 45º
  • 0.7ft
    , 17s, NE 40º

The small NW energy pretty much disappeared at the buoys, but the N one shows a promising 4ft 15s from 45 degrees. Below are the maps of March 27 though 29 that show the fetch that generated it. Plenty angular spreading involved.

The Surfline forecast calls for a rise throughout the day and 3ft 13s at sunset.

Home guess for Hookipa in the morning is waist to chest high and clean with an up trend.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Thursday 3 30 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday. That's as big as the waves got.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.8ft
    , 13s, SSW 200º
  • 2.6ft
    , 7s, S 180º
  • 1ft
    , 11s, S 170º

1.8ft 13s of southerly energy at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore

  • 5ft
    , 12s, NNW 345º

Barbers

  • 5.6ft
    , 7s, SSE 160º
  • 2ft
    , 13s, NW 310º

NW energy picked up at the distant NW buoys and it's showing a wrap of 2ft 13s at Barbers. None of the other leftover local buoys records it and my challenging home guess for Hookipa is chest to head high and clean. Plenty flat moments between sets though.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Wednesday 3 29 23 morning call

I didn't take any action photo yesterday, this is after my afternoon wing session up the coast.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers

  • 4.4ft
    , 7s, SSE 160º
  • 1.4ft
    , 14s, S 185º
  • 1.5ft

  • 1.4ft
    , 14s, SSW 195º
  • 1.1ft
    , 11s, SSW 200º

Couple of small south swells at the buoys (we looked at the fetches yesterday) together with some southerly windswell. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 3.7ft
    , 10s, E 95º
  • 2.4ft
    , 15s, NNW 345º
  • 1.8ft
    , 11s, SE 130º

Mokapu

  • 4.3ft
    , 10s, E 90º
  • 2.6ft
    , 7s, ESE 110º

NW buoy shows a new small long period NW swell. Below are the maps of March 25 and 26 that show the small and distant fetch that generated it.

The Surfline forecast (which, in lack of the local buoys, has become the most important tool in trying to guess what's in the water) calls for very little in the morning (0.6ft 16s at 6am), 1.4ft 15s at sunset and a couple of feet 13s tomorrow.

Based on that and on the fact that easterly windswell at Mokapu is now coming from 90 degrees, home guess for Hookipa is flat to occasionally waist high, slowly increasing throughout the day up to possible chest to shoulder high sets at sunset.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Tuesday 3 28 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday afternoon.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 2ft
    , 13s, SSW 210º
  • 0.8ft
    , 17s, SSW 205º

Couple of feet 13s plus 0.8ft 17s at Lanai. Below are the maps of March 22 though 24 that show the fetches that possibly generated them (black arrow for the 13s and blue arrow for the 17s). The directions are not quite compatible with my hypothesis, but I don't always trust them.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101

  • 3.5ft
    , 10s, ESE 115º
  • 2.7ft
    , 7s, ESE 115º
  • 1ft
    , 9s, NW 310º

Mokapu

  • 4.2ft
    , 10s, E 80º
  • 2ft
    , 5s, E 95º
  • 0.3ft
    , 15s, NE 45º

Very small energy is in the water, the biggest of which is the easterly windswell clocking in at 4.2ft 10s from 80 degrees at Mokapu. Home guess for Hookipa is waist high with possible bigger sets and clean. Possibly a tad bigger on eastern exposures, depending on the shadow line of the specific spot.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Monday 3 27 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday afternoon. Photo by Jimmie Hepp from this album.

Albee Layer's turn at sunset.

Got in and came out through the lip.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 0.5ft
    , 11s, SSW 205º

Almost nothing at the buoys. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101

  • 4.6ft
    , 11s, NW 320º
  • 3.2ft
    , 9s, E 90º

Mokapu

  • 5.2ft
    , 10s, E 100º

Kaneohe Bay

  • 3.6ft
    , 11s, ENE 65º
  • 2.5ft
    , 7s, ENE 70º

Small NW swell continues at the NW buoy now down to 11s while the easterly windswell is also in the same range. The mix of the two should give Hookipa waves in the head high range and clean conditions thanks to the lack of wind for most of the morning.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

South shore
Lanai

  • 0.7ft
    , 14s, SSW 195º

Lanai registers a trace of 14s energy from 195. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 3.2ft
    , 15s, NW 315º
  • 5.1ft

    , 9s, E 80º
  • 4.3ft
    , 6s, E 85º
  • 1.5ft
    , 13s, N 10º

A new small NW swell is at the NW buoy. Below are the maps of March 23 through 25 that show the fetch that generated it.

Below is the Surfline forecast showing this swell only rising to 1.6ft 16s at sunset and reaching 2.6ft 13s tomorrow morning.

Home guess for Hookipa is around chest to head high and clean with no wind for the first half of the morning and a slight increasing trend throughout the day.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
