Sunday 5 5 24 morning call

Hookipa yesterday. Photo by Jimmie Hepp from this album.

This was around 4pm.

7am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion. South shore

Lanai
      • 1.4ft
        , 13s, SSW 205º
      • 0.9ft
        , 20s, S 175º

Small southerly energy at Lanai. I went and look for the fetch of the 20s reading and from a direction like that, it can only be the one indicated in the maps of April 30 through May 3 below. Seems a bit of an early arrival, but 20s waves move at 31 knots of speed (in open ocean!) and Lanai is a very sensitive (and quite sheltered) buoy. If it really is that swell, it's a couple of day early compared to the Surfline forecast. It's also possible that instead it comes from the same fetch but when it was in the Tasman Sea (April 28-29) and the direction reported by Lanai is wrong (should be around 215).

Alright, I wrote all that above (and I'm gonna leave it there, so you guys see how I search for the possible fetches behind a swell) but then I looked better and think I found the fetch. It's that angular spreading one indicated by the black stick in the maps of April 29 and 30 below. Time and direction match in this case. Sorry about that. The other one should arrive Wednesday and be much bigger.

Check the Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

NW swell peaked yesterday and today it should slowly taper down. Home guess for Hookipa is around head high in the morning and then bigger mid day thanks to the pumping windswell.
To whom it may concern, a couple of practice dw races are planned for today by Mauidownwindfoil. Conditions should be excellent.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
