The wingers at Kaa made sure to stay away from the big waves breaking on the reef instead.

The giant NW swell was more giant at the buoys than it was in the water, but, as the photos show, still pretty large. Today it's pretty much half the size, but Hookipa could still be too big to surf. No wind in the early morning, windy in the afternoon.

Giant NW swell is at the buoys. Below is the single biggest buoy reading I've ever seen: 20.7ft 21s at 1.50pm yesterday at the NW101 buoy.

Let's see what kind of fetch made such a huge swell. Below are the maps of November 21 through 23. Strong wind and large fetch, but the aim was more towards the mainland, so I'm very surprised to see such big numbers locally. I guess the angular spreading played a big role. The whole Maui's north shore will be a closeout, the only surfable place will be the Kahului harbor (or Paia Bay at your own risk). I can already see lots of jet-skis heading out of the harbor, get ready for plenty photos from Jaws on the social media and I hope OneMoreFoto will go to Honolua instead.

Lots of energy at the buoys. Below are the maps of November 19 and 20 that will help identify the sources. The 8ft 14s from 5 degrees at Pauwela come from the Gulf of Alaska fetch indicated by the blue stick. The 8ft 16s from 310 (and the 2.6ft 18s at Waimea) come from fetch in the Kamchatka corner indicated by the black stick and will be rising all day locally. Tomorrow there will be a much bigger swell coming from the fetch that started off Japan indicated by the red stick (which I will discuss tomorrow).
Home guess for Hookipa is a bit more challenging than usual. For sure it's going to be big, probably around double overhead and not much wind in the morning, possibly getting even bigger in the afternoon and extra large tomorrow.

8.7ft 12s from 350 is the dominant swell in the local waters. It'll probably gradually decline throughout the day before tomorrow a new large long period NW swell will start arriving and become XL on Friday (11ft 18s predicted by Surfline). Home guess for Hookipa is head and a half to double with calm winds in the early morning, but still probably a bit stormy because of the other periods in the water.

Stormy NW swell turned NNW locally and will continue to stay elevated throughout the day. Home guess for Hookipa is double overhead plus and stormy. Seek sheltered places, like the Kahului harbor or the west side.
