Friday 4 22 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday. Photo by Jimmie Hepp from this album.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers

1ft at 15s SSW 200º
0.3ft at 22s SSE 165º

The 0.3ft 22s reading at Barbers confirms the timing of what is going to be the biggest south swell of this freshly started season. Below is the the Surfline forecast which has 0.3ft 21s at 6am (black line). Remarkably accurate, I'd say. This swell won't do much today (but the 1ft 15s also at Barbers will), but it's predicted to reach 2.5ft 18s tomorrow mid day. The longer the period, the more the open ocean size (which is what this forecast shows and what the buoys measure) gets amplified when it hits the shore's shallow bottoms. Very few spots in Maui like that long of a period (probably less than 10), I personally prefer the last phase of long period south swells (12-14s), specially on the Lahaina side spots: more consistent and less closeouts.

Below are the maps of April 15 through 19 that show the pretty solid fetch that generated this swell.

This clips shows some of the waves at Teahupoo on Wednesday. Pardon the French.

Btw, I just added the Tahiti to Maui travel times table to the post: Buoys to Maui travel times and Maui's shadow lines. 3 days at 20s and 4 days at 15s might be the two couple of numbers to remember.

My Facebook friend Mataio is on his 9 feet SUP in this shot by Alexy Berthet.

Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency. Onshore flow this morning.

North shore
NW101
6ft @ 12s from 354° (N)

NW001
5.6ft @ 12s from 347° (NNW)

Hanalei
5ft @ 12s from 331° (NNW)

Waimea
5.1ft @ 13s from 344° (NNW)

Mokapu
6ft @ 7s from 70° (ENE)

NW swell turned NNW and still has decent size at the buoys. Both the north shore and the upper west side love that. Home guess for Hookipa is for around head and a half and it finally seems like a not so windy morning.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
