On June 2nd-5th the Maui Kitefest will also have two categories of winging: racing and freestyle. Andrea Crociara is training hard for it and it's fun to watch him going for those crazy double rotations.
4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
No southerly energy at Barbers. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for
size, conditions and consistency.
North shore
NW001
7.4ft @ 15s from 323° (NW)
Hanalei
Waimea
Pauwela
New long period NW swell picked up at the buoys as predicted and it will peak during the day. Home guess for Hookipa is for double overhead or more.
In the Buoys to Maui travel times and Maui's shadow lines post I calculated the shadow line for Kanaha as 319. So you might think that a swell from 320 is not blocked. But 320 is only the dominant direction (the one associated with the most energy). Every swell has a range of directions instead. In the picture below, for example, I put the NW101 and Pauwela graphs together with the Surfline forecast, which, in this particular case, indicates a direction of 322 +/- 5 degrees. In other words, a range from 317 to 327 (a fairly narrow one, btw). So a spot like Kanaha will see slightly less energy than Hookipa, as the more westerly sets will be effected by the shadow of Molokai. Nonetheless, this is going to be a pretty solid winter swell for the whole north shore. Strong trades.
