Only traces of NW energy leftover at Hanalei, while the easterly windswell keeps raging. Home guess for Hookipa is head to head and a third peaky mushy windy waves.

Tuesday 2 21 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday late afternoon.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.4ft
    , 13s, SW 220º
  • 0.4ft
    , 11s, SW 215º

Small SW energy at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 7.9ft
    , 9s, E 85º
  • 3.2ft

  • 2.1ft
    , 13s, NW 310º

Mokapu

  • 9.1ft
    , 9s, ENE 70º

The mix of small medium period NW and high short period ENE energies continues. Home guess for Hookipa is around head high or occasionally more, bigger on eastern exposures.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Monday 2 20 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday mid day.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.2ft
    , 13s, SW 215º

Small southerly energy at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 5ft
    , 13s, NW 305º
  • 7ft
    , 9s, ESE 105º

Hanalei

  • 5.7ft
    , 9s, ENE 60º
  • 2.4ft
    , 13s, NW 315º

Mokapu

  • 6.1ft
    , 9s, NE 55º
  • 4.1ft
    , 6s, E 80º

The mix of moderate medium period NW and short period NE energies continue. Home guess for Hookipa is head high to occasionally bigger. The conditions will be influenced by the strong ESE flow that might leave the Kahului spots with no wind in the morning and, depending on how sunny the day will be, might fill in instead in the afternoon, like the map below suggests.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Sunday 2 19 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday afternoon.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.5ft
    , 13s, S 190º

Small southerly energy at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

  • 7.6ft
    , 10s, E 85º
  • 4ft
    , 14s, NW 320º

Hanalei

  • 5.7ft
    , 10s, E 80º
  • 3ft
    , 15s, WNW 300º

Mokapu

  • 5.8ft
    , 9s, NE 55º

The moderate NW swell picked up in line with the prediction at the leftover upstream buoys while the short period NE declined at Mokapu. The mix of the two should give Hookipa waves in the head to occasionally head and a half range.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Saturday 2 18 23 morning call

Hookipa yesterday around 4pm. It looked a lot better around 2pm with light offshore wind.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.5ft
    , 14s, S 185º

Some southerly energy at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency (down at the moment).

North shore
NW001

  • 10.1ft
    , 11s, ENE 70º
  • 5ft
    , 7s, ENE 70º
  • 1.4ft
    , 16s, NNW 335º

Hanalei

  • 8.4ft
    , 11s, ENE 60º

0.4ft 18WNW(300º)
Mokapu

  • 10.1ft
    , 11s, ENE 60º

Here's the list of the buoys that are down at the moment: Barbers, Pauwela, Hilo, Kaneohe Bay and Waimea. I think we can call it a pandemic. Waimea was down already yesterday, so that 6.6ft 15s of yesterday wasn't true.

What is left shows the elevated ENE windswell and a new low long period NW swell starting to show at NW and Hanalei.
Below are the maps of February 14 through 18 that show the fetch that generated it (black arrow) together with the much closer NE fetch (blue arrow) that generated the much higher but shorter period NE energy.

This is the Surfline forecast for the next couple of days showing the new NW swell slowly reaching 1.7ft 17s at sunset locally. Nothing to be particularly excited about, as most of the waves in the water will belong the NE swell. Hopes for a decent final day at the Sunset Beach contest tomorrow, but nothing like the excellent conditions of day 3 though.

Based on the Mokapu reading, home guess for Hookipa is for head and a half mushy, peaky waves and no wind in the morning.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Friday 2 17 23 morning call

Austin Kalama upside down at the harbor yesterday...

...before switching to SUP surfing.
6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.4ft
    , 15s, SSW 210º
  • 2.5ft
    , 7s, SSE 165º
  • 0.6ft
    , 13s, SW 225º

Interesting SSW energy at Lanai. Below are the maps of February 11 through 14 that show the fetch that generated it.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore

Waimea

  • 6.6ft
    , 15s, NW 320º
  • 7.2ft
    , 10s, NNE 30º

Mokapu

  • 7.8ft
    , 10s, NE 45º

The high short period NE energy is "canceling" the NW one at all buoys but the more protected Waimea, which instead still shows a healthy 6.6ft 15s. The Sunset Beach webcam seems to confirm that.

Home guess for Hookipa is head and a half to possibly double of the above described mix of longer period NW and shorter period NE.
Contradicting (or rather correcting) what I wrote yesterday about the upcoming weather, the ESE wind direction and the frequent rains (check the 7am Windy radar below) might provide opportunities of clean waves. The key of the game will be to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right gear. Good luck to everyone.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
