Friday 12 13 19 morning call

The Jaws contest was awesome, this is an aerial photo by Daniel Sullivan.

4am significant buoy readings and discussion
South shore
No southerly energy at the buoys, check the Lahaina webcam to see if there's any leftover wrap (there was some yesterday).

North shore
NW101
11.6ft @ 9s from 42° (NE)
8.9ft @ 14s from 333° (NNW)

Waimea
9.3ft @ 14s from 312° (NW)
6.1ft @ 9s from 346° (NNW)

Pauwela
10.2ft @ 15s from 324° (NW)
4.7ft @ 9s from 335° (NNW)

XL NW swell peaked at Pauwela yesterday morning (graph below), right when the Jaws contest started. It will continue to slowly decline all day, but with 10ft 15s to start with, there should still be plenty energy all day (Hookipa still too big for most). Notice the high 9s NE energy at the NW buoy, which is immersed in a strong fetch of NE winds (see fetch map below). That makes me think that the 9s energy at Waimea and Pauwela is from that direction too (instead of NNW). This secondary energy will compromise the cleanness of the NW waves, but even more than that so will the trades, which are already up in the early morning. Just like November, also December had a first half with cleaner than average conditions, but just like November also December should provide a windy second half.
I really hope they won't finish the Pipe contest today (got to catch up with the previous rounds!).

Kahului Tides

North Pacific has a strong NW fetch (10ft 15s from 322 predicted by Surfline on Tuesday) and a couple of windswell fetches that will unite. Plenty trade winds on tap in the next several days.

Weak Tasman Sea fetch down south, not enough for us.

Morning sky.
