Monday 1 23 17 morning call

Day or rest for me yesterday. I did go check a spot that was kinda big, not perfect shape and crowded with very good surfers and decided to pass. Honolua was probably the place to go (got no reports), but probably crowded over there too.

In the afternoon I thought about joining some friends for a windsurfing session that must have been quite intense. This is Casey on a mast higher (there were much bigger). Notice:
- the status of the sea (I would have gone mostly to check that out)
- the barge on the background that looks like is trailing two heavy ropes for stabilization

Instead I spent a lot of time documenting myself on one of the three interests that I pretty much have at the moment (surfing, nutrition and spirituality) and here's the result: the commitment to a week without coffee and olive oil (all oils, actually) to see how I do without them. Damn, I wish I had gone sailing instead...

This obviously has nothing to do with surf reporting, but once I make it public, I'll have to stick to it. Actually, I'll report daily the results.
Getting completely rid of drinking any form of alcohol about a month ago was MUCH easier than I thought, those two are going to be tough. I actually started already and yesterday's salad was dressed with a tahini sauce of my creation that tested quite allright.
The thing that impressed me the most is that I could wash the bowl without detergent. Which means that the digestion of its content did not require as much bile. Hopefully that's a good thing.

5am significant buoy readings
South shore

Lanai
1.1ft @ 15s from 222° (SW)

Barbers
1.4ft @ 15s from 223° (SW)

Lovely southerly readings, I'm finally gonna teach that lesson that I've been delaying for lack of ideal conditions. Check the webcams, of course.

North shore
NW101
10.1ft @ 10s from 77° (ENE)

N
7.2ft @ 11s from 4° (N)
7.2ft @ 8s from 81° (E)

Pauwela
9.6ft @ 9s from 55° (ENE)
3.4ft @ 6s from 67° (ENE)

Still pretty big numbers at the buoys from this short period swell that is now turning more and more to the east, following the path that the originating fetch had. It should be no surprise for the ones of you that remember that.  That's all there is today, the big NW swell is only tomorrow.

Current wind map shows:
1) westerly fetch off Japan
2) the strong fetch responsible for tomorrow's swell is now aiming at the west coast mostly. I circled its very back part hoping that we will still get something out of the angular spreading
3) a tiny section of a low offshore the west coast is aiming its winds at us, but I don't think we'll see anything out of it
4) windswell fetch
Nothing relevant in the south pacific.

NAM3km map (forgot what time, but it didn't change much during the day) shows lighter more easterly winds for the day.

AAARGH!!! Where's my coffee?!?!?!

GP, do you care to share with us the sources of your research that lead your reasons for quitting coffee? Oils make a lot of sense...but there is so much back & forth on coffee... would enjoy reading what you have found.
Enjoying all the topics. Dan

Hi Dan,
I'll post that on tomorrow's call so that everybody can read it. Cheers.
