1 7 17 morning call

Couple of sessions yesterday for me, but I'm not gonna call it another gorgeous day of surfing on the north shore because of the northerly wind. It was still a bloody gorgeous day nonetheless, I hope you guys noticed.

I'd like to thank a new blog sponsor: KAST Fitness wear. You'll find the link to their website by clicking on their banner on the right.

No shot of the day, but I got my hands on this one that is going viral on social medias. I know nothing about photoshop, you guys think this is real/possible?
I think it's clearly not real, but being Kai Lenny, I think it could be possible, even if it isn't real...

Here's how a real wave at Mavericks (probably the same, from a slightly different angle) looks like. On the photo above, they only added a unnaturally steep wall to the left of the falling lip. But that also means that the thickness of the lip is real. That's what is terrifying in these pictures, in my opinion.

4am significant buoy readings
South shore

No sign of south swells at Lanai and Barbers, that doesn't mean that it's flat. Check the webcams and you'll know. It's that easy.

North shore
N
5.3ft @ 12s from 14° (NNE)

Waimea
5.6ft @ 12s from 15° (NNE)

Mokapu
5.1ft @ 13s from 31° (NE)

Pauwela
6.6ft @ 13s from 29° (NNE)

No need to look at the NW buoys when there's a NNE swell. They would give us no information at all, because whatever is hitting them from that direction, won't hit us afterwards. N buoy instead is perfectly positioned for that. I reported Waimea and Mokapu, so that we have an idea of how our Oahu neighbors are doing. Buoys position is available at link n.0 of GP's list of meteo websites.

Maui's got the most energy, but we'll have to deal with another northerly wind day. Overall, conditions will be very similar to yesterday and holding steady.

Current wind map shows:
1) a wide NW fetch (but the strong wind section is smaller)
2) more energy will keep coming from the NNE

NAM3km map at noon shows light northerly winds.

BTW In the impossible picture of Kai, looks like they tilted the horizon clockwise (you can see this if you look at the coastline in the background, it's definitely not straight), so the wave face appears at least 20° steeper than reality

I think this is the original un-doctored shot of Kai Lenny on that Mavericks wave:
