Sunday 3 10 19 morning call

A shortboard session for me yesterday. The NW swell got pretty big in the afternoon yesterday. Jimmie Hepp took photos of the windsurfers and kiters at Hookipa. I picked this lovely wipeout from this gallery.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos from Honolua (just yet), which must have been pumping for the contest. I'll find some tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy the amazing sunset in case you missed it.

4am significant buoy readings
South shore
Lanai
3.5ft @ 17s from 266° (W)

What's happening here, imo of course, is that the readings of the south swell are being masked by the much larger NW swell, so we can't rely on them at all. What I know is that Ala Moana looked like head high in the sets yesterday afternoon, which is bigger than it looked in the morning. I'll report from the Lahaina side as soon as I'll be there, but the waves should be bigger than yesterday.

North shore
NW101
8.2ft @ 15s from 352° (N)

Hanalei
9.6ft @ 17s from 330° (NW)

Waimea
8.3ft @ 15s from 317° (NW)

Pauwela
9.1ft @ 17s from 321° (NW)
7.1ft @ 8s from 51° (ENE)

Wow, this swell went much bigger than everybody expected! I might have missed something because I sample the fetches map only once a day, but what about uncle Pat, Surfline and the WW3 model? The storm must have really done something sneaky that went (literally) under the radar.

Below on the left is the graph of Pauwela which shows a peak at almost 10ft 17s yesterday night. Next to it was my dotted line prediction, which was pretty close, but it stopped at 8ft. And next is the Surfline forecast (heavily based on the WW3 model), which still shows "only" 7.5ft 15s for today.

So obviously we're still going to have big waves all day pretty much everywhere on the north shore, but also very strong easterly trades.

The usual wind maps are not available this morning. No big deal, today really there is no need to have a more detailed prediction, as it's going to be blowing hard from the east all day. Below is the very explicit NAM3km model from the Windguru page.

North shore has a NW fetch and the local windswell one.

Nothing from the South Pacific.

Morning sky.
