Monday 3 6 23 morning call

Gabi tried a Foil Drive setup for the first time and unsurprisingly did extremely well.

7am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Lanai

  • 1.4ft
    , 14s, SSE 165º
  • 1.3ft
    , 12s, S 175º
  • 0.7ft
    , 11s, SSW 200º

Small southerly energies at Lanai. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency. Looks onshore because of the Kona flow.

North shore
NW101

  • 5.7ft
    , 9s, NNW 340º
  • 2.1ft
    , 10s, ESE 105º
  • 1.8ft
    , 11s, NW 305º

Mokapu

  • 4.1ft
    , 8s, ENE 70º
  • 0.7ft
    , 14s, NE 35º
  • 0.9ft
    , 6s, ENE 65º

A couple of NW swells are at the NW101 buoy. Below are the maps of March 3 though 5 that show the fetches that generated them. The NE angular spreading fetch on the last one might be responsible for the 0.7ft 14s from 35 degrees reading at Mokapu.

Only a couple of feet 12s of NW energy are predicted locally by Surfline at the end of the day. It might be more than that thanks to the 9s energy, hard to tell because of the lack of local buoys. Home guess for Hookipa in the morning is for wais to shoulder high and very clean thanks to the light Kona. Note: without the local buoys, the home guess for Hookipa is obviously more difficult than usual.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Sunday 3 5 23 morning call

Jason Toth (foreground) is another Foil Drive user who, like Jim Bones (background), uses it in e-foil mode to go back out. He's experimenting with placing the battery box in a backpack thanks to a modification of the cable that requires some knowledge of electronics (which he has, as he builds large drones).
He inspired me to buy a large fanny pack on Amazon and try that myself, but leaving the cable as it is and making sure to use a leash that is well shorter than it.

He's also letting me try some Unifoil gear, which I'm intensely doing these days.
Message to all the foil brands: please get in touch with me if you'd like to have your gear evaluated for possibly carrying it at Hi-Tech. In fact I've become their de facto foil tester, as I have a lot of time on my hands and 6 years of foiling experience.
For me trying new foil gear is half of the fun of foiling, plus the more stuff I try the more I learn about foils. Cheers Jason.

Hookipa yesterday afternoon.

This satellite image shows a massive front that takes the whole length of the Pacific Ocean and is approaching Kauai. The front will be responsible of the change of the wind patters that is about to happen.

Change that is reflected in the Windguru forecast below.

Nothing but declining easterly windswell at the few leftover buoys. Home guess for Hookipa is chest to shoulder high and clean thanks to the lack of wind.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

Saturday 3 4 23 morning call

About a month ago, I lost my gopro in the water at the end of a downwind run. A week ago a guy called Julian found it and called me to return it. Massive thanks to him and to Tyler, who in the meantime gave me his as a replacement.
In the found camera I had the clips of the second of two downwind runs in which I compared a Armstrong chopped HA525 to my unchopped one. This is the video of the two runs (February 3rd and 4th) I finally put together.

6am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore

  • 2.2ft

  • 0.9ft

  • 4.1ft
    , 6s, ENE 75º
  • 0.6ft
    , 13s, NNE 20º

Small NW swell shows minimal energy at the NW buoy, and will be declining all day. Easterly windswell is still up to 6.5ft 10s at Mokapu, but that too is destined to decline, thanks to the fact that one of the most long lasting periods of brutally strong easterlies I can remember ends today.
Home guess for Hookipa is around head high and possibly semi-clean, or at least cleaner that it's been for weeks. Bigger on eastern exposures.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.

  • 6.2ft

New small long period NW energy is at the outer buoys. Below are the maps of February 26 through 28 that show the fetch that generated it.

This is the new format of the Surfline forecast that shows this swell reaching a rather unimpressive 1.5ft 15s at sunset. If you're a Surfline subscriber, please let them know how hard to read this format is compared to how it was.
Wouldn't count too much on that energy, specially because the easterly windswell will be dominant again. Home guess for Hookipa is head and a half and stormy.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
