Sunday 5 15 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday.

I went trough the clips of the unfortunate run of two days ago when I used up all the juice of the small battery of my Foil Drive Plus and decided to upload this unedited one to show that until then it was actually pretty good. As I wrote, I don't think there's many people doing SUP foiling downwinders with a 725 front foil. Not a chance to take off without some kind of assist.
Yesterday instead I did a winging run with it, and what a pleasure it was. At my current status of skills and preferences, the wing downwinders remain way more fun for me, as they're easier and less strenuous. The fun in the SUP ones lays mostly in the challenge instead.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
Barbers

1.2ft at 14s S 180º
0.8ft at 18s S 170º

After a week of big waves and a week of virtually nothing, the south shore should now go back to some kind of normality for this time of the year. That seems to be confirmed by the small but long period southerly energy at Barbers. Surfline calls for the biggest days on Tuesday and Wednesday with sizes like 2ft 16s and 2.5ft 15s respectively. That energy should come from the fetch depicted in the maps of May 9 and 10 below.

All this said, I'm not sure what generated the 0.8ft 18s at Barbers today, check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore

Mokapu

4.2ft @ 6s from 95° (E)
3.6ft @ 9s from 85° (E)

Only declining windswell on the north shore. Home guess for Hookipa is flat to belly high, bigger on eastern exposures.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
