Wednesday 1 11 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday afternoon had onshore wind.

A common friend reminded me of this video I did 12 years ago to document the 2011 Paia Bay Invitational, won by the recently deceased Marcio Freire.

No southerly energy at the buoys. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

New XL NW swell is rising at the upstream buoys. Below are maps of January 9 through 11 that show the fetch that generated it.

Surfline predicts a local peak this afternoon at 17ft 17s.

Swells of this size greatly reduce the number of surfable spots. On the north shore, it's going to be either the harbor, Jaws or... Paia Bay, of course. Otherwise, west side. The swell will have a ton of energy with multiple periods arriving at the same time. The wind will be onshore and make the waves look even stormier (that's why the called the Eddie off). Yesterday instead the day 1 of the backdoor shootout was run.

Wind map at noon. The other ones can be found here.
