Saturday 10 19 19 morning call

Big day on the north shore yesterday, I went to Hookipa for an hour to take some pics. I was mostly focused on Lanes, as Alex Aguera was out challenging the difficult conditions on a wing and a foilboard. In my opinion, those waves are too steep to be ideal for foiling (unless they're really small), I much prefer Kanaha or Kite Beach. In this picture Alex found himself with a steep section in front and had to push hard on the front foot in order to keep the foil from overfoiling.

Unfortunately the pressure was just a bit too much and he ended up pearling and wiping out. Those wipeouts can be very sketchy, fortunately all was good.

The other reason why I was looking at Lanes, was the presence of master aerialist Matt Meola.

Plenty carnage also at Hookipa where the sailors were naturally divided into two categories: the ones that were trying to survive and the ones in attack mode. And then there was Antoine Martin (pictured below in a backloop off the lip attempt) in destroy mode. Jimmie Hepp posted a remarkable album of the day.

6am significant buoy readings
South shore
Barbers
1.5ft @ 18s from 192° (SSW)

Lanai
1.2ft @ 18s from 175° (S)

New low long period swell at the buoys, here's what Pat Caldwell wrote on Tuesday:
A severe gale tracked east along 60S to the SE of New Zealand 10/11-13 with seas growing over 30 feet in a large area. Highest seas were aimed at the Americas. Angular spreading could bring in surf locally. The onset stage is due late Friday into Saturday, with the event filled in by late Saturday 10/19. It should peak near the average Saturday night into Sunday from 180-200 degrees.

Below are the maps of Oct 11, 12 and 13 where you can see the fetch circled in blue. The Lahaina webcam is not working this morning, but there should be very inconsistent long period sets in the waist to chest high range.

North shore
NW101
3.2ft @ 12s from 321° (NW)

Waimea
2.9ft @ 12s from 334° (NNW)

Pauwela
5.9ft @ 8s from 63° (ENE)
2.9ft @ 14s from 341° (NNW)
2.7ft @ 12s from 343° (NNW)

NW energy down in period to 12-14s (yesterday it was 16), but still up at all the buoys. The size of the waves will be a lot smaller than yesterday, but with the addition of 6ft 8s of windswell, Hookipa should still be overhead. Early morning easterly winds not too bad, cranking mid day.

Wind map at noon.

North Pacific has the same two fetches of yesterday. Moderate NW swell out of the NW one in 3-4 days.

South Pacific has a small S fetch.

Morning sky.
