Monday 3 21 22 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning. I gave it a 3.5. I guess I need to adjust my scale, been a bit stingy lately.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

South shore
No southerly energy at Barbers. Check the Lahaina and Kihei webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW101
7.4ft @ 15s from 332° (NNW)

Hanalei
2.6ft @ 17s from 316° (NW)

Waimea
1.3ft @ 16s from 323° (NW)

Pauwela

3.8ft @ 9s from 88° (E)
1.7ft @ 5s from 72° (ENE)
0.6ft @ 18s from 306° (WNW)

New long period NW swell rose at the NW buoys and will rise all day locally. Below are the maps of Mar 18 through 21 that show the fetch that generated it. Notice how it started NW and then became NNW to N.

Below are the graphs of NW001 and Pauwela together with the Surfline forecast, which seems to be perfectly in line with the buoys. Home guess for early morning at Hookipa is for belly high windswell waves with the occasional 18-17s small set and clean conditions. Should be pretty easy to distinguish between the two. Realistically, the swell will start being noticeable only in the late morning and for the rest of the day. Should be well overhead by sunset, but with unfavorable winds (see next paragraph and check out the wind maps).

Below is this morning's weather map. The red arrow shows the movement of the high pressure that will settle to our north after the passage of the front you see on the map (and in the satellite picture, just NW of Kauai). That will bring light northerly (onshore) winds starting late morning.

Forecast of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.
