Saturday 8 15 20 morning call

Thanks to blog reader Scott for his donation.

As predicted, the waves on the north shore were relatively pumping. This is my pick of Jimmie Hepp's gallery of the windsurfing action at Hookipa.

You'll also find the whole sequence of this spectacular attempt of a move called Superman by Ricardo Campello.

Gofoil posted this video of Alex Aguera wing wave riding at Hookipa, a discipline I will cautiously explore this winter. Restarting after wiping out in the impact zone is not easy.

4am significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
1ft @ 13s from 193° (SSW)
0.9ft @ 16s from 198° (SSW)

Lanai
1.1ft @ 16s from 189° (S)
1ft @ 13s from 185° (S)

Slow start of a week of decent waves on the south shore. Pat Caldwell accurately describes the evolution of the fragmented fetches. This is just the start of his narrative: An active cyclonic pattern began to unfold near New Zealand 8/7...

Below is the collage of the maps of August 8 through 14 that will help the few that will read it.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency. There's bigger sets, but they're extremely inconsistent.

North shore
N
4.2ft @ 10s from 56° (ENE)

Pauwela
4.8ft @ 9s from 40° (NE)
3.4ft @ 8s from 46° (NE)

The NE swell should be on a slow decline today, but there should still be at least head high waves at Hookipa and on eastern exposures.

Wind map at noon
(the other ones can be found at link n.-2 of GP's meteo websites list in the right column).

Fetches map (circles legend: red: direct aim, blue: angular spreading, black: blocked, yellow: apparent direct aim, but out of the great circle ray map, so not 100% sure).
North Pacific (about 4 days travel time from the NW corner of the North Pacific):

South Pacific (about 7 days travel time from east/west of New Zealand):
