Wednesday 6 30 21 morning call

More foiling on the south shore yesterday.

Foiling at low tide has some risks. Got lucky on this one.

4am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
2.5ft @ 14s from 195° (SSW)

Lanai

2.3ft @ 15s from 184° (S)

New longer period pulse not at the buoys yet (or never really went up to the predicted 17s), but there's plenty energy in the water.
Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

Hanalei
2.3ft @ 9s from 335° (NNW)

Pauwela

2.6ft @ 7s from 58° (ENE)
1.8ft @ 9s from 1° (N)

NW energy is locally tiny, so is the windswell. Hookipa virtually flat, maybe tiny waves at Pavils.

Forecast and energy spectrum of Pauwela from this PACIOOS page.

7.30am

Hookipa is virtually flat

Tuesday 6 29 21 morning call

Thanks to blog reader Patrick for the donation and the kind words.

The Queen bee almost overfoiled there. No much wave needed to enjoy foiling.

That photo was taken from my new observation spot. The 35.5 inches wingfoiling mast allows me to sit like that. Thanks Jeff for the photo.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.
South shore
Barbers
2ft @ 15s from 194° (SSW)

Lanai

2.1ft @ 14s from 188° (S)

Below are the maps of June 20 through 25 that show that there shouldn't be any flat days anytime soon. The 2ft 14s at Lanai should be from the fetch you see on the first map east of New Zealand. Tomorrow there should be a bigger longer period pulse (3ft 14-15s predicted by Surfline on Wednesday night) coming from the much larger fetch that happened the following days SE of New Zealand. It was much broader and stronger, so even though it was oriented more towards the Americas, we should receive ample angular spreading energy.
A much stronger swell will arrive July 4-8 (3ft 18s predicted by Surfline on Monday), you can see the originating fetch today's map down below.

Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

Pauwela

2.1ft @ 9s from 353° (N)
2.1ft @ 6s from 77° (ENE)
0.8ft @ 11s from 37° (NE)

9s NW energy keeps trickling down. Home guess for Hookipa is waist to belly high and clean in the early morning.

Monday 6 28 21 morning call

Hookipa yesterday morning. Photo by Patrick Wardle.

I admit I was a bit star struck when Armie Armstrong unexpectedly entered Hi-Tech yesterday. He's in Maui for a photoshoot for his brand and here he's riding a wave at Lanes during a downwinder.

5am Surfline significant buoy readings and discussion.

Lanai

2.2ft @ 11s from 196° (SSW)
1.4ft @ 16s from 192° (SSW)

Small southerly energy at the buoys. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore

Pauwela

2.6ft @ 10s from 339° (NNW)
2.2ft @ 5s from 80° (E)

Short period NW energy is gradually declining and will continue to do so throught the week. The windswell instead will increase together with the trades. Home guess for Hookipa is belly to chest high.

1.6ft @ 15s from 189° (S)
1.2ft @ 13s from 174° (S)

Mixed period small southerly energy at the buoys, check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

Pauwela

3.6ft @ 10s from 332° (NNW)
1.7ft @ 5s from 86° (E)

As reported below this post, Hookipa was excellent again in the early morning, but already around 7am there was some texture from the trades that are predicted to come back, as indicated by this NOAA page:
A high pressure ridge will build and lift slowly northwest of the islands over the next few days, slowly increasing trade winds across the region.

It should stay around head high all day, with a slow downward trend as indicated by the PACIOOS forecast below (notice the next NW swell on July 2nd).

South shore yesterday morning.

Hookipa at sunset had some head highers.

Lanai

2.1ft @ 14s from 180° (S)
0.9ft @ 18s from 202° (SSW)

Couple of feet 14s is always fun, plus Lanai shows a promising foot 18s of a new long period pulse. Check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

North shore
NW001

4.5ft @ 12s from 327° (NW)
4.3ft @ 10s from 321° (NW)

Waimea
4.1ft @ 9s from 338° (NNW)

Pauwela
3.8ft @ 9s from 3° (N)

NW energy of yet another out of season small swell is at the buoys (again, not sure why Pauwela shows N). Below are the maps of June 20 through 25 that show the fetch that created it.

Home guess for Hookipa is for shoulder to head high and clean.

Hookipa has clean short period small waves that occasionally and inconsistently get up to shoulder high.

Friday 6 25 21 morning call

Lahaina yesterday had some really good waves.

Kathy Shipman showed remarkable improvements in her last four sessions of prone foiling.

2ft @ 10s from 180° (S)

Lanai

2.5ft @ 15s from 185° (S)
1.8ft @ 11s from 189° (S)

Pretty decent numbers at the buoys, check the Lahaina webcam if interested, for size, conditions and consistency.

Hanalei

Waimea
2.9ft @ 10s from 338° (NNW)

Pauwela
2.9ft @ 10s from 19° (NNE)

Around 3ft 10 from the NNW are at Hanalei and Waimea, not sure why Pauwela shows 19 degrees instead. Home guess for Hookipa is around chest to shoulder high and clean thanks to the lack of wind.
