Saturday 4 6 19 morning call

The funding campaign for the new Lahaina harbor webcam has raised $1305. Thanks a lot and let's keep them coming. I'm gonna start my posts with an update like this until it reaches its goal of $2,000. Please donate to the page, not to me. I have nothing to do with this campaign, other than the fact that I totally support the cause.

Two shortboard sessions for me yesterday. In between, I took some photos: this is Ian Walsh's beautiful bottom turn. He's going to be pretty busy today with his Menehune contest at Hookipa. Great conditions for the groms all day and busy parking.

Will Hunt.

The digital zoom is pretty useless on my camera, but I wanted to get really close in this one. Beautiful looking left.

One for the ladies, Tanner stretching.

One for the gents. Those strings work.

This is my pick from Jimmie Hepp's daily gallery of the windsurfing action.

3am significant buoy readings.
South shore
No indication of southerly energy at the buoys.

North shore
NW101
6.1ft @ 12s from 312° (NW)

Hanalei
5.7ft @ 13s from 334° (NNW)

Waimea
5.2ft @ 13s from 330° (NW)

Pauwela
4.5ft @ 14s from 340° (NNW)
2.3ft @ 9s from 10° (N)
1.5ft @ 11s from 330° (NW)

Beautiful numbers at the buoys. Below is the graph of NW and Pauwela together with the Surfline forecast. The current swell should come up a bit more during the day, Surfline calls for 7ft 15s, but that seems optimistic seen the readings at the upstream buoys. I think it'll be more like 5.5ft 13s, but whatever it'll be, what counts, as usual, is the wind which this morning is going to be ideally calm with possible thermal offshore in the first couple of hours of light. Not sure where I'll surf, so not sure I'll be able to report from Hookipa, which should be well overhead and with excellent conditions.

Wind map at noon. Should be calm till 10ish.

North Pacific has a distant WNW and a nearby NW fetch.

Nothing form the south.

Morning sky.

Picture 5: so that's how you tell how strong the wind is? The angle of the strings?
